I believe it would be a bit harsh to refer to Peter Yates as a journeyman filmmaker. Granted that he had a diverse body of work and made some films that were truly dreadful (The Deep, Krull and The House on Carroll Street), but while he gained much attention for Bullitt, I believe that he should be remembered for The Friends of Eddie Coyle and Breaking Away.
I agree; I loved Breaking Away when it first came out, but it will always be hard for him to escape those ten minutes in Bullitt. I saw the movie when it first came out and while I didnt understand a lot of the plot, I remember how hard I was gripping the seat during that chase.
