"I never truckled; I never took off the hat to Fashion and held it out for pennies. By God, I told them the truth. They liked it or they didn't like it. What had that to do with me? I told them the truth; I knew it for the truth then, and I know it for the truth now." Frank Norris.
Robert Wright has an excellent piece on the shameful opposition - here.
(Note: Wright reaffirms what I've long felt to be the case - The Weekly Standard isn't just a magazine I disagree with politically . They're bad people.)
This battle in the culture war has little to do with what is essentially a zoning issue.
1) Can the new site be zoned for a place of worship?
2) If so, can a court enjoin those against having a mosque as opposed to another religious denomination located some two blocks from Ground Zero under the establishment clause?
3) One of the opponents at the hearing cited that this was a security and not a religous issue....and this guy is running for Congress.
Taking him at face value how many blocks away from Ground Zero would the proposed mosque have to be in order to pose no threat?
The answer to that question shows who the "bad people" really are...because his honest answer... the one he would never publically state... is 'outside the territorial limits of the USA'.
The problem with Richard Wright is that he is too tepid in the face of evil...let's not laud him for being soft on islamophobes.

I'm a big fan of the late Richard Wright, however this op-ed was by Robert Wright.

thanks for the correction.... and while we agree on the issue...I believe the Wright should have been tougher.
