The political leadership of New Jersey, the state where I was born, in a rare act of political courage has said no to state-sponsored homicide and voted to repeal the death penalty.
Before anyone decides to berate me for being insensitive to the survivors of murder victims, please read this, then this as well as this.
It is a special sort of arrogance to think that only those who support the death penalty have consideration for murder victims. Coretta Scott King opposed the death penalty. Elie Wiesel, who lost his family in the Holocaust opposes the death penalty. So do these folks. I salute the leaders of New Jersey who have had the courage, the compassion and the wisdom to say no to vengeance and a firm unequivocal yes to justice. I hope with all of my fervor and every fiber of my being that this is the start of a larger trend.
