Exit polls seem to give Alan Garcia, Peru's president in the 1980's a victory in today's runoff election. If I were a Peruvian I would have probably spoiled my ballot or left it blank.
What a choice. Alan Garcia's record of quadruple digit inflation and the rise of the Shining Path followed by the godawful Fujimori versus Ollanta Humala and his quaint relations.
For the sake of Peru and its citizens, I truly hope that Garcia is telling the truth when he says he's learned from his past.
Randy,
I'm back into a regular schedule so I'll be able to read and comment more regularly now.
The situation with Humala in Peru reminds me a little of Morales a couple years ago. Morales lost a couple elections, but a couple frustrating years later, is now President. I am slightly optimistic about Garcia, especially given the economic situation he is inheriting, but if that growth doesn't translate into a better life for the very impoverished majority in Peru, look for Humala to come back strong.
