As commenter Civil Truth noted in the comments to this post, it is now official and I can congratulate Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf on her election as president of Liberia and being the first woman to lead an African nation.
This statement, by the way, is a fine start to helping Liberia:
"We will create an inclusive government. We will also work [against] other types of exclusions. Never again in this nation shall a person or group of persons feel so excluded that they have to resort to violence in the name of justice," said 67-year-old Sirleaf, dressed in a maroon gown with matching head dress.
If George Weah had won, one wonders if they would have commented on what he was wearing.
Nota bene for the reactionary UN bashers:
The election was organized and its security guaranteed by a 15,000-strong UN peacekeeping force.
Our correspondent says most Liberians believe a free poll in their war-ravaged country would have been impossible without the UN presence.
The head of the UN mission says the task at hand now is reconciliation and reconstruction.
One area where Ms. Johnson-Sirleaf can start is with the abolition of practices like this.
