One of my biggest regrets concerning my understanding of modern history is the fact that when the televised congressional Watergate hearings and the impeachment hearings were taking place, I was in Germany. Don't get me wrong, I truly enjoyed my time in Germany, but I never saw any of the hearings on Armed Forces Television there.
I did follow the proceedings in the Stars & Stripes and one comment (which I have to paraphrase here) that was stated by a congressman whose name I have forgotten went something like this:
"Why are you talking about a cover-up here? I am the president of the United States and it is my responsibility to enforce the laws. How dare you even discuss committing obstruction of justice in my presence!" Get out of my office, turn in your security id's! You are all fired!"
So having just finished reading this book (a much bettter read than Richard Clarke's book, I might add):
and reading the comments from the usual administration apologists bent on trashing Wilson and not addressing the issue, I just have one question: why should we support an administration that has staffers who may very well have committed a crime and in the process ruined a CIA employee's career for the sole purpose of indulging one of mankind's basest emotions: spite? At least Nixon eventually fired Haldeman, Ehrlichmann, Mitchell and Dean. Bush has done nothing of the kind. One wonders if his naked ambition coupled with his inability to acknowledge mistakes and accept responsibility is more important to him than the country's security.
