A federal court jury in Miami on Wednesday found that Armando Fernández Larios, a former Chilean military officer and admitted terrorist conspirator was liable for the death of Winston Cabello, a Chilean economist murdered as part of the infamous "Caravan of Death" tour shortly after the coup in Chile in 1973:
The eight jurors found Armando Fernández Larios -- a former Chilean military officer who lives in Kendall and manages an auto body shop -- liable for Cabello's death and ordered him to pay $4 million to Cabello's relatives. The award marked the first time a U.S. jury has awarded damages for crimes against humanity, according to the Center for Justice & Accountability, the San Francisco group that filed the suit for the family.
Family members acknowledged that it is unlikely they will ever collect much of the $3 million in compensatory damages or $1 million in punitive damages, but said financial gain was never their intent.
The lawsuit was filed under the Alien Torts Claims Act, the law passed in 1789 and used in several instances since 1979 to pursue claims against human rights abusers. It's also the same law that the Bush Administration is seeking to undermine for this same purpose.
Given this latest development regarding Larios, his admitted involvement in the act of state-sponsored terrorism known as the Letelier bombing, and the fact that Argentina wants to question him regarding the assassination of General Prats and his wife in 1974, why is he still allowed to live in the USA? Where's the moral clarity here, Mr. President?
