This is probably my least favorite German word, but it is so apt. Atrios links to the following two posts; one by Glenn Reynolds and one by Bill Quick. Here´s Reynolds first:
FACTOID OF THE DAY: Bill Quick looks at the death toll from the Paris heat wave and remarks: "Why, that's almost twice as many as the number of US troops killed in Iraq. Send in the UN!"It's the "brutal Parisian summer." Did Robert Fisk warn us about that?
Reynolds tries some belated ass-covering:
UPDATE: A couple of readers seem to think I'm gloating at the fact that people in Paris are dying from the heat. No. I just think it brings a little perspective to the -- genuine -- gloating we're seeing from some antiwar folks about "massive" U.S. casualties.
Well Glenn, let´s assume your update is true. I have no idea how you were raised, but I was raised to know that two wrongs do not make a right. You are gloating, Glenn and you should own up to it. The gloating comes from the fact that you linked to this post by Bill Quick:
Why, that's almost twice as many as the number of US troops killed in Iraq. Send in the UN! Send in the French!Er....
When the heat wave took place in Chicago in 1995, many of the hundreds who died were old. Considering the fact that heat stroke tends to affect the cardiovascular system, this is probably the case with the deaths in Europe. This is beneath contempt and the two of you should delete these posts and apologize. We should be better than this.
Amen.

i gotta agree, randy. i am personally very fond of schadenfreude but mocking the deaths of old people is more than a little over the line of acceptability.
