OHMIGAWD! South Dakota's legislature is considering a "law" that would create a "justifiable homicide" category for killing abortion providers. John Cole has it HERE.
I don't know. There is a pretty "high" bar, but I'm submitting this as a likely candidate.
Can Obama harness the forces that might spur new growth? This is the key question for the next two years.
What are those forces? Essentially, there are two. One is the power of the business cycle, the tidal force that throughout history has dictated when the economy expands and when it contracts...
What else might affect the economy? The answer is obvious, but its implications are frightening. War and peace influence the economy.
Look back at FDR and the Great Depression. What finally resolved that economic crisis? World War II.
Here is where Obama is likely to prevail. With strong Republican support in Congress for challenging Iran's ambition to become a nuclear power, he can spend much of 2011 and 2012 orchestrating a showdown with the mullahs. This will help him politically because the opposition party will be urging him on. And as tensions rise and we accelerate preparations for war, the economy will improve.
Via Washington Monthly's Steve Benen, whose comments on this are HERE.
PS: Atrios calls Broder a "sociopathic monster." "Shrill" but definitely arguable. This loonytoons suggestion that WWII-style spending - just so long as it's actually on a war - is just what the doctor ordered for a deeply depressed economy comes from the same Beltway Denizen who wrote last year that the big challenge to Congress and Obama is, quote, "don't pass along unfunded programs to our children and grandchildren." I'm not sure I'd go as far as "sociopathic monster", but "incoherent, irresponsible, blathering idiot" seems about right.
While by 2010 standards, somewhat-chastened Neo-Con crazy David Frum is a "moderate" conservative, I can't help but enjoy watching his melt-down as his party is taken over by people even he acknowledges are total lunatics.
Today Frum asks, "Is Palin now the 2012 Front-Runner?"
Minnesota Congresscrank Michelle Bachmann has come up with the most recent example of Obama's plot to destroy American values with his Socialist agenda. Sarah Palin's BFF has called the BP $20 billion escrow account to financially compensate victims of the company's Gulf oil rig blow-up a "redistribution of wealth fund" designed "for more control, more money to government."
(Apparently there is no outer right "loonytoons" margin if you're a member of the Republican Party - no line that can't be crossed, no stupidity too gross.)
After passage of a law requiring suspicious types to prove their citizenship to local police and another putting an end to ethnic studies programs, Arizona goes into the "you can't make this stuff up" zone. From the Arizona Republic:
A group of artists has been asked to lighten the faces of children depicted in a giant public mural at a Prescott school.
The project's leader says he was ordered to lighten the skin tone after complaints about the children's ethnicity. But the school's principal says the request was only to fix shading and had nothing to do with political pressure.
The "Go on Green" mural, which covers two walls outside Miller Valley Elementary School, was designed to advertise a campaign for environmentally friendly transportation. It features portraits of four children, with a Hispanic boy as the dominant figure.
R.E. Wall, director of Prescott's Downtown Mural Project, said he and other artists were subjected to slurs from motorists as they worked on the painting at one of the town's most prominent intersections.
"We consistently, for two months, had people shouting racial slander from their cars," Wall said. "We had children painting with us, and here come these yells of (epithet for Blacks) and (epithet for Hispanics)."
Wall said school Principal Jeff Lane pressed him to make the children's faces appear happier and brighter.
"It is being lightened because of the controversy," Wall said, adding that "they want it to look like the children are coming into light."
Lane said that he received only three complaints about the mural and that his request for a touch-up had nothing to do with political pressure. "We asked them to fix the shading on the children's faces," he said. "We were looking at it from an artistic view. Nothing at all to do with race."
City Councilman Steve Blair spearheaded a public campaign on his talk show at Prescott radio station KYCA-AM (1490) to remove the mural.
In a broadcast last month, according to the Daily Courier in Prescott, Blair mistakenly complained that the most prominent child in the painting is African-American, saying: "To depict the biggest picture on the building as a Black person, I would have to ask the question: Why?"...
Faces in the mural were drawn from photographs of children enrolled at Miller Valley, a K-5 school with 380 students and the highest ethnic mix of any school in Prescott. Wall said thousands of town residents volunteered or donated to the project, the fourth in a series of community murals painted by a group of artists known as the "Mural Mice."
The public art, funded by a $5,000 state grant through the Prescott Alternative Transportation Center, was selected by school students and faculty.
"The parents and children love it," Lane said.
. . . Just not by Pat Robertson. No one said it better, more succinctly and more eloquently understated than Shepard Smith:
So when I'm at the gym this afternoon, note that the "Breaking News" on CNN is that Tiger Woods was in a minor car accident, was treated and released from the hospital. All this merits a press conference, two reporters and an analyst.
God help us.
