Republican Congressmen Cass Ballenger of North Carolina and Kevin Brady of Texas visited Guatemala recently and were very concerned about the tactics of intimidation being used by Efraín Rios Montt and his supporters:
Rep. Cass Ballenger, R-N.C., said those uprisings could make anyone who was ready to go to the polls to vote against Rios Montt afraid to do so. ''Fear is a way to influence an election,'' Ballenger said. ``It seems to me we are dangerously close to an unfair election.''
Ballenger's fears were seconded by fellow Republican Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas.
The State Department said Ríos Montt's Guatemalan Republican Front party provided tents and other materials to supporters who were responsible for the violence.
Rios Montt: like Charles Taylor, just another friend of Pat Robertson.
